He knew when he had heard the words that it wasn’t going to be an easy task.
“Bring in the Patterson’s.”
Roy and Orville Patterson, two former deputies who had ridden for the Judge, had went as rotten as an apple on the hottest day. Marshal Bates had wanted him to bring them in if he could or end their evil ways if he couldn’t, but the situation had become complicated. To find the trail the two Deputies had ridden down would mean following them into the biggest range war this side of the Mississippi.
Can Deputy Tyler Musler find the two former Deputies before lead flies or will he be caught in the middle of something bigger than he imagined?

“You cut any sign yet?” Elijah asked‚ while continuing his own search.
“No, not yet,” replied Tyler. “There’s a good chance they’ve been washed out in the last day or so because of the rain.”
Elijah pondered on the statement and agreed. “You might be right about that. It’s still muddy in some of the low places that we’ve been riding through.”
The two men rode side by side, secretly hoping their fears were unfounded. “I only hope we can find him before trouble does,” Tyler said, trying to break the uneasy quietness that had surrounded them; “You know how Jacob can be.”
“We will,” replied Elijah. “There aren’t too many men who could corral an old goat like Jacob, and once they did they’d just leave the gate open, hoping he’d leave on his own accord.”
Tyler found himself smiling at the picture Elijah had drawn. The cracked smile, whenever it found a way to his worn face, seemed almost wolfish at times. The eyes held no malice‚ just the quiet gleam of confidence. Elijah was right about old Jacob‚ though.
Tyler Musler has had a hard life. Born a slave in Alabama, he has taken all that life has thrown at him and prospered. From his escape from slavery‚ to his time fighting in the Union Army, he has struggled to overcome the boundaries life would set on him.
With the war over‚ and his time in the military coming to an end‚ he has been commissioned by the Judge to serve in Indian Territory as a Deputy Marshal. Facing down outlaws‚ and bringing justice to an untamed land are the least of his problems.
Sent to capture a group of outlaws who’ve been stealing cattle in the Three Forks area, a man from his past is about to make himself known.
