“I'm sure I don't have to tell you how important this is. The Pattersons had served with distinction, and had been well respected in the community. It was a hard blow for the marshal service when they turned, and the morale of the men is down. I trust you understand what you repre-sent, and that it is your top priority to bring them in.” Every one of the deputies nodded their head in under-standing except for Milston.
“I don't think it's going to come down to gunplay, Don. Those boys just need a good talking to, that's all.” Tyler watched as Marshal Bates went red in the face. He'd never seen the marshal get so angry so fast.
“I don't particularly care what you think, Deputy Milston. Those boys are riding a bad trail, and if we don't bring them in, somebody is going to die.” Deputy Milston didn’t reply, but Tyler could tell he was hard pressed to keep his own temper in check.
