Ebony Marshal Chapter Outtakes
Ebony Marshal: Bitter Excerpt from Chapter 1
Ebony Marshal:Bitter
“I was getting mighty tired of looking at the sunsets from the porch anyway.” Tyler began. “I reckon it's about time I went on the scout, and I can think of nothing better than going after those dry-gulching Patterson boys.”
“You mind if I tag along,” asked Elijah. “I have busi-ness in Fort Smith I didn't quite finish up.”
“Sure, no problem.” The rest of the conversation was just a blur to Claudia. All she knew was that Tyler was about to ride out again, leaving her and her son to their own devices. She looked out the window towards the west into the graveyard. An eerie premonition overcame her as she looked at the marker her husband had recently put up. She couldn't help thinking that every man had a time, and that every man had a weakness. Elijah excused himself and followed Joshua outside to set up in the barn. As he left, she heard the soft reassurances of her husband in her ear.
“Everything will be all right, Claudia. No harm will come to me.”
Claudia said nothing as she snuggled up to him under his arm. She just held on to her man a little tighter‚ hoping somehow that things would turn out all right.

Ebony Marshal is a western in the traditional sense, in that there are enough obligatory ambushes to suit the most demanding taste, all while providing an interesting look into a segment of western history that is often overlooked--the role African-Americans played in paving the way west. I found Chandler’s style pleasing rather than preachy, which made for an engrossing read

The ending was rather abrupt and left me wishing for a hint as to whether or not I could expect to see the Ebony Marshall again. Nevertheless, I found the book difficult to put down and would be happy to read the further adventures of Tyler Musler, the Ebony Marshal.
